My Story...

Making Light in the Dark...

Life changes quickly and strangely when you least expect it. My path was forever changed when diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at the age of 25 in 2005. I was a few years out of college, teaching private voice lessons, acting in commercials, dancing and touring with a Christian Troupe, choreographing and musical directing community shows, and sneaking off to audition for opportunities in television.

How quickly it all changed...

By the time I was 29 I was bound to hovering cautiously over a cane and often in a  wheelchair when nobody was looking. I was conflicted with my image as a trendy, youthful teacher and aspiring artist and the sudden reality of changes in my mobility that forced me to look pathetic and old. When age 30 crept up, the mobility continued to fail and my eyesight was gradually lost. I was no longer legal to drive, unable to see faces, read music, or function in the way I was determined to. My Optic Nerves were so badly damaged that it left me with little spots of normal, but mostly the darkness of knowing it cannot be fixed, even in this day and age.

I happened upon a Neurologist known throughout the country for his specialization in MS. He certainly took an interest in me and has stopped at nothing to slowly revive me to walking and having the energy and positivity to face each day and conquer! He believed in my spirit so much that he recommended me as an MS Advocate to the drug company, Biogen. They now sponsor me to tour and tell my story at events and it is the most incredible time of my life.

Although my sight will never be the same, I have learned the ways of staying positive and determined and knowing I can make light of the darkness. Teaching private voice and K-8 music at a local private school has been a continual part of my life. I have never given up and never intend to, even when the elements fail me. I have gotten to invent new ways of doing so many things and have learned so much about the power of our minds. I will never give up and will continue the fight.... every day makes me stronger!
